Rick Galbos, a former Calgary Stampeders running back who spent five seasons with the Red and White, has died at 75.
Galbos played No. 21 for Calgary from 1973 to 1977. Though he rushed for 1,244 yards and three touchdowns during his time with the Stamps, he was primarily used as a blocker for Canadian Football Hall of Famer Willie Burden, who rushed for a then-franchise single-season record 1,896 yards in 1975 — a record that still stands. Galbos also caught 172 passes for 2,016 yards and eight touchdown receptions.
Before joining Calgary, the Ohio native had played college football at Ohio State, where he won a co-national championship with the Buckeyes in 1970. He was drafted by the NFL's Washington team in 1973 but soon signed with the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughnecks before being traded to Calgary.
After his time with the Stampeders, Galbos played six games for the Montreal Alouettes during the 1977 season and won the Grey Cup with the team that year. Following his retirement from football, he moved to Calgary, where he worked in construction and served as an assistant coach for the University of Calgary Dinos. He was a longtime member of the Calgary Stampeder Alumni Association.
