Rogers Sports & Media shuttered Sportsnet 960 and 660 News in Calgary on Tuesday, citing declining audience and revenue trends. The closures eliminate Calgary's sole all-sports radio station and its affiliated news outlet.
Sportsnet 960, which first broadcast under the CFAC call-sign in October 2011, served as the official radio home for the NHL's Flames, the AHL's Wranglers, and the WHL's Hitmen. It also carried live Toronto Blue Jays coverage and local sports talk shows featuring reporters who travelled with the Flames and covered Stampeders practices and games.
The station was the only dedicated sports radio outlet in the city. Its closure removes what had been 12 hours of daily Flames content — game broadcasts, analysis, debate, and coverage of trades, signings, and draft picks.
In a statement, Rogers said the decision followed a thorough review of radio stations across the country. The company is closing six stations in four cities: Sportsnet 650 and News 1130 in Vancouver, NewsRadio Halifax, and NewsRadio Kitchener also shuttered Tuesday.
The Flames, who held an exclusive 11-season partnership with Sportsnet beginning in 2024, have not yet announced alternative radio broadcast plans. Staff at the station, including prominent on-air personalities, now face an uncertain job market in a city with no remaining dedicated sports radio option.
