Calgary police have laid charges after a stabbing outside the Sunalta CTrain station sent one man to hospital with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday morning.

Officers responded at 7:05 a.m. to the incident outside the station. Police believe the suspect was involved in an earlier altercation on the 700 block of 11 Avenue S.W. After witnesses intervened and separated those involved, the suspect returned to the area and stabbed one of the individuals.

Acting Insp. Mike Anderson said officers located the suspect 45 minutes after the incident following a brief foot chase outside a nearby residence and arrested him without incident. The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in stable condition.

Laura Murray, an employee at One Way Foods deli, said she saw a man she recognized as a resident on the ground outside her store being kicked by a group of homeless people. She learned the man had denigrated some homeless women in the group, sparking the altercation. The man later left the area, then returned to the park a block away where he was threatened about five minutes before the stabbing.

The assailant later returned to the store with a balaclava, ranting at staff. Before leaving, he abandoned a foot-and-a-half-long knife behind the ice-cream cooler.

Anderson said police next steps include speaking with the victim — currently receiving hospital care — and the offender, plus reviewing video and witness accounts. He acknowledged the incident could affect community safety perceptions.

"Any time we have a violent crime like this in a community, any community, but especially in a community where we have families and parks and things like that, it's extremely concerning," Anderson said. "They have the right to be concerned. I'd be concerned."

On Wednesday, 31-year-old Fuad Abdi Yusuf was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, personation with intent, obstruction of a peace officer, identity fraud, and three counts of failure to comply. He will appear in court on July 15, 2026.
