The City of Calgary announced Thursday the design for Thunder Run's replacement waterslide, which will be fully enclosed to protect riders from Calgary's weather and support year-round operation.

The new slide will feature a dynamic path with a series of twists and turns, incorporating translucent sections that create changing colours and light effects. The colour scheme will blend reds, pinks, purples, oranges and yellows throughout. When complete, it will become the focal point of the Village Square Leisure Centre pool area.

Thunder Run operated for more than 30 years before closing as part of a major facility overhaul. The original slide needed removal because the leisure centre required a year-long closure for critical repairs and upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems. Village Square serves as a hub for Fair Entry, Calgary Transit, Alberta Health Services, Calgary Public Library, and the Centre for Newcomers.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas said in a statement: "We've heard from countless Calgarians about what the Thunder Run has meant to them over the years. The incredible turnout for the slide's final weekend showed just how much people care about places like this and that recreation facilities create memories that last a lifetime. Replacing the Thunder Slide means future generations will have the chance to create memories of their own and enjoy this beloved recreation experience for decades to come."

The project is part of the city's GamePLAN, a long-term strategy investing in existing community facilities and planning new recreation spaces to address increasing demand. Village Square Leisure Centre and the new slide are expected to reopen near the end of 2027. A building permit was issued on August 24, 2026.
