Twisted Element, a 2SLGBTQ+ venue on 11 Avenue SW in the Beltline, had its patio vandalized and items stolen this week, damage discovered Tuesday. The incident damaged the bar area and electrical system, affected the AstroTurf, and will disrupt daytime and nighttime events planned for the weekend.

Owner Al Carswell estimates the combined loss at around $10,000, including labour already invested in preparing the space for Pride events. Calgary police are investigating; the force said it is too early to determine motive.

"This is our main event this weekend being Pride. That's really why we have the patio," Carswell said. Despite the disruption, Carswell emphasized that all Pride celebrations at Twisted Element will continue as planned. "I want to make sure everyone who bought tickets is aware that all of our events are going ahead. We are not letting this dampen our spirits or affect our Pride celebrations."

Calgary Pride Week runs through September 6. Police have not released information on whether this incident is part of a pattern of vandalism at Calgary 2SLGBTQ+ venues, or whether it is being investigated as a hate crime or bias-motivated incident.
