The Calgary Catholic School District has named two new high schools opening in fall 2027, following community surveys in the areas they will serve.

St. Carlo Acutis School will serve the Seton/Rangeview community, while St. Pier Giorgio Frassati High School will serve West Calgary. The Board of Trustees approved the names on June 17.

Both naming processes included surveys of parents and parishioners. The Seton/Rangeview survey drew 828 responses, while the West survey received 795.

Lisa Myers, principal designate for St. Carlo Acutis School, said having a modern saint—rather than a historical figure—matters for high school students. "There's real pictures of him. For high school students, saints are old, that's the very first thing that they think of is a drawing, not a real picture," Myers said. "It's amazing that they'll have real photos to look at and stories that they can relate to."

St. Carlo Acutis was born in London on May 3, 1991.

St. Pier Giorgio Frassati High School's location was a factor in its naming. The school directly faces the Rocky Mountains. "St. Pier Giorgio was an outdoorsman who loved physical activity," said Greg Masterson, principal designate. "St. Giorgio talked about how with God there is nothing to be afraid of and when we look at that trust in God, that is certainly hope in the future for our students."
