Village Square Leisure Centre, one of Calgary's largest recreational hubs, is closing its doors in late August for more than a year of critical repairs. The Northeast facility in Pineridge, which serves roughly 300,000 visitors annually, will undergo extensive upgrades to aging electrical and mechanical systems.

The facility is over 40 years old and most of its original equipment is past serviceable life, according to project engineer Patrick Cyr. "This project addresses that critical aging infrastructure," he said. The work includes replacing boilers, air handling units, and safety improvements to the pool area.

Most spaces will close Aug. 31, with repairs expected to wrap by end of 2027. The arenas will remain open until March 2027, then close for construction and reopen mid-September 2027. Calgary Public Library, Fair Entry, and the AHS Community Health Centre will remain open with brief closures to be announced.

The city is coordinating with nearby communities to host programming. Pineridge Community Association will operate fitness classes, newcomer groups, after-school drop-in programs, and craft sessions. The Centre for Newcomers will relocate to 125-565 36th St. N.E.

"Everything is still within walking distance," said Pineridge Community Association president Marcie Buzsik, calling the partnership a "win-win."
