Construction is set to begin this month on Calgary's first combined fire station and library, a $30.2 million project that will serve the communities of Walden, Legacy, Chaparral, and surrounding areas.
The Walden Fire Station and Library will be located at 969 Walden Drive S.E. The permanent fire station will include two bays and span 13,569 square feet, while the library will occupy 10,000 square feet. The facility is expected to open in the first quarter of 2028.
A temporary one-bay fire station has operated at the site since 2020 and will remain fully operational throughout construction. After the permanent facility is built, the temporary station will be dismantled and removed. The city chose the location to allow firefighters to respond to emergencies quickly and without obstacles, and to provide multiple services in one convenient location.
The Walden Library will feature physical reading materials, desktop and laptop computers, public printing and internet access, meeting and study rooms, and in-person programming and play opportunities.
During construction, temporary fencing will be adjacent to the temporary fire station, and a small section of pathway on the west side of Walden Common S.E. turnaround will close. Bike path access will be maintained throughout construction.
The province has contributed funding to the project, though the breakdown has not been specified.
