With one month until referendum, Elections Alberta scrambles over polling-station security

With one month until the October 19 referendum on separation, Elections Alberta has not yet finalized security plans for the long lineups expected at polling stations, leaving Calgary Police and Edmonton police departments preparing contingency responses without clear coordination.

Elections Alberta is anticipating voter turnout of 80–85 per cent of registered voters — a historic level. The organization has not disclosed specific security protocols or resource allocation for managing lines and crowd control at polling locations. Calgary Police confirmed they are prepared if security plans materialize; Edmonton Police Service Chief Warren Driechel said a "significant plan" is being developed internally but acknowledged that "having officers stationed at every polling station is not realistic." Instead, Driechel said the focus will be "preventing any kind of events that may be civil disorder, investigations of any criminal offences that are coming out of this, whether it's threats, assaults, intimidation."

Early voting by mail has ramped up sharply. Elections Alberta has received 520,000 special-ballot requests, mailed out over 300,000 packages, and approved about 24,000 returned ballots so far. Roughly 300 ballot packages arrived with missing ballots. The deadline to apply for a special ballot is September 26; ballots must be returned to Elections Alberta by October 9 to be counted.

Polling stations open at 9 a.m. on October 19 and close at 8 p.m.
