Canadians will no longer be charged when cancelling or switching phone and internet plans starting Friday, June 12.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced the change in March as part of its Consumer Protections Action Plan. Under the new rules, telecom providers can't charge activation fees for new plans, modification fees for changes, or early cancellation fees unless a device is still under contract.

"We are taking action to give Canadians more control over their Internet and cellphone services," said CRTC CEO Vicky Eatrides. "This means that consumers can switch to a better deal without having to pay extra just to get the service that works best for them."

The move comes as Canadians face some of North America's highest broadband costs. A 2026 survey by UK-based comparison site Broadband Genie ranked Canada 130th globally with an average broadband cost of US$55.26 (C$76.99).

The CRTC also created the Wireless and Internet Code to help Canadians understand their rights and obligations in service contracts. The timing gives Vancouver residents heading into summer a practical window to shop around for better rates without penalty.
