Alberta is planning a new campground at Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, located roughly 275 kilometres north of Edmonton along Highway 88.
The 7,606-hectare park protects boreal forest and foothills landscapes that are rare within Alberta's park system and sits on a major migratory corridor. It's home to the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation and the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, drawing birdwatchers and researchers from across North America.
The proposed development would expand camping and accommodation options in the North Shore Area. Currently the park offers Marten River Campground with 114 sites, an RV area at Devonshire Beach, fixed-roof accommodations at The NEST, and group-use areas. The new campground would add capacity along one of Alberta's largest and highest-quality road-accessible lakes.
According to the province's request for proposal, a concept plan and project charter are already finalized. The successful contractor will work with Alberta Parks to refine design and investigative work toward implementation. The estimated contract runs from June 25, 2026, to July 28, 2028.
The park is operated by Alberta Parks, North Region, and sits within the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River.
