Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor and Detroit will open "at the end of the week," but acknowledged that if the opening "takes a little longer, it will take a little longer."

Carney's comment signals flexibility around the timeline for the second bridge crossing between the two cities, which has faced complications from the Trump administration and political opposition.

President Donald Trump said in February that the U.S. would need to be compensated before allowing the bridge to open. A White House official confirmed to Global News on Tuesday that his position has not changed.

Canada and Michigan co-own the bridge, but Canada covered the entire $6.4 billion construction cost. The project has also faced significant pushback from members of the Moroun family, who own the competing Ambassador Bridge. House Democrats in Washington are investigating whether the family acted to obstruct the new bridge.
