A reward has swelled to $35,000 for information about the shooting death of a wild horse in central Alberta.

Grey Hawk, a stallion known to advocates with the Help Alberta Wildies Society, was seen alive and in good condition west of the hamlet of Caroline on Wednesday before being discovered dead by campers about an hour later. When HAWS volunteers reached the site on Thursday, they learned the horse had been shot.

HAWS reported the death to Fish and Wildlife and the RCMP and filed a report with the Sundre RCMP, initially announcing a $10,000 reward. On Friday, a supporter matched the offer, raising the total to $20,000. By the weekend, additional pledges of $10,000 and $5,000 pushed the reward to $35,000.

The group moved Grey Hawk's remains to a location out of public view, where the carcass will feed local wildlife.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sundre RCMP and reference file number 2026935914. Tips that help lead to an arrest may qualify for the reward.
