Monday Morning: Cool Start, Hot Music Tonight

Morning, E-town. It's 9°C right now — bring a layer, but you'll warm up as the day goes. UV's running high at 6.0, so if you're outside for lunch, the sunscreen's worth it. You've got nearly 17 hours of daylight to work with today, and sunset isn't until 10:07 p.m., so the evening stretches long.

On the commute: Route 924's got planned detours running today between 152 Street and 156 Street in that northwest corridor — if that's your usual way, give yourself a few extra minutes and watch for the signs. A handful of bus stops in the area are closed as well, so double-check your regular stop if you're LRT-adjacent.

Few things worth knowing as your week kicks off. There was a serious incident at the Wapiti River Bridge — a crane operator was killed in a crash, so if you're heading that direction, expect heaviness in the news. On a brighter note, Connor Murphy and the Oilers are closing in on a deal; the Oil keep building. Meanwhile, a Sherwood Park dancer is fighting back against an RCMP ticket over safety concerns — that one's worth following. And heads up if you're a drinker: Alberta's raised minimum liquor prices for the first time since 2008, so your tab just shifted.

Also catching attention: Beaumont's dealing with a water emergency after heavy rain overwhelmed the system. If you've got friends or family out that way, worth a check-in.

If you're thinking lunch, Live Bowl'd just opened a permanent spot on Whyte Avenue if you're craving something solid. Marugame Udon's also heading into the Mall if you want to scope that out soon. There's solid new smoke at Okie Dokie Smokies if hot dogs are calling, and Zaab Thai's worth a visit too.

Tonight's where it gets good. Three live music events are happening across the city — Jacob Do Octet's playing Yardbird Suite at 7 p.m. if jazz is your thing, and John Butler Trio's at Midway (18+) the same time if you want something a bit louder. Victoria School's also holding their graduation ceremony at the Jube at 6 p.m. if you know someone walking. With sunset that late, you've got plenty of time to wrap work and catch a set.

One more thing: that historic CIBC building downtown — nearly 100 years old — is up for sale. The branch is heading to the Ice District. End of an era down there.

Stay warm out there. See you around.
