Monday's cooler turn, flights back on track, hockey at the Plex
WestJet's moving again, temperatures dropped overnight, and there's live sport to catch after work.
Morning — it's noticeably colder out there today. We've dropped to 9°C, so dust off something with sleeves if you've been living in summer mode the last few days. UV's running high at 6.0, so even though it feels fresh, you'll still burn if you're out long. We've got a solid 15-plus hours of daylight, which is nice, but sunset's already creeping in at 9:27 PM — that's the reminder that August means we're losing light fast now.
If you were stuck waiting on WestJet over the weekend, there's good news: the airline and CUPE reached a tentative agreement, so the job action's over and flights are getting back to normal. Worth double-checking your booking if you had anything disrupted, but the worst of it should be behind us now.
Couple of things worth knowing as the week starts. The online gambling situation here in Alberta is drawing more people to support groups — if that's something on your radar or someone you know is dealing with it, that's a real local story unfolding. On a lighter note, there's some interesting shifts happening with food banks in Fort Sask and Strathcona — they're moving to a grocery-style model, which changes how people access help. And if you've got kids heading back to school soon, the Edmonton school board is racing to hire 52 new complexity teams before fall, though teacher shortages are still a squeeze.
If lunch is on your mind, Bazaar's bringing Ukrainian street food to Station Park in Old Strathcona — that's a solid move for the neighbourhood. On Whyte, Greg Sweeney's HOM Street Food has taken over the kitchen at Bibo's, so there's new energy there if you're grabbing dinner on the Ave. And Coliseum Steak & Pizza just hit 50 years in the Parkdale neighbourhood — that's the kind of place worth celebrating.
Tonight's your chance to catch some live hockey if you're in the mood. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup's at Rogers Place with Czechia taking on the USA at 1:00 PM — junior international hockey, solid level of play. It's an indoor thing, so the cooler temps don't matter, but if you're thinking of heading down, you've got the whole evening to make it work. Sunset's late enough that you could grab an early dinner somewhere and still catch puck drop.
Good start to the week, and the weather's crisp without being miserable. Get sorted and stay warm.
