Folk Fest and sunshine — Saturday's got layers.
14 and clear, sunset at 9:17. Folk Fest's on, hockey's at Rogers, and comedy's waiting tonight.
Morning. It's a proper Saturday out there — 14°C, UV's running high at 6, and you've got fifteen hours of daylight to spend. Sun's going down at 9:17, so plan accordingly if you're heading out after dark.
Getting around: Route 701's got planned detours running today from a couple spots on and around Jasper and 97 Ave, so if you're transit-dependent, give yourself a few extra minutes. Nothing major, but worth knowing. Heads up too — the 184 Street overpass over the Yellowhead closes for three months starting Monday, so if that's part of your regular route, now's the time to figure out your alternate.
On the serious side: a liquor store owner, Sukhjit Randhawa, was killed in what looks like a robbery. The community's hurting. Also happened again — anti-Islamic graffiti showed up outside a north Edmonton daycare, second time in two months. These things matter.
Better news on the volunteer front: Give4Grades expanded their school supply drive out to Sherwood Park and pulled together 58 backpacks and over 10,500 items. That's real neighbourhood work.
Food-wise, there's good stuff happening. If you're in Old Strathcona, Bazaar's bringing Ukrainian street food to Station Park — worth the walk. Greg Sweeney's HOM Street Food has taken over the kitchen at Bibo's on Whyte, so if you've been curious, today's a solid day to check it out. And Lingnan's — the spot that's been anchoring family dinners here for over seventy years with their egg rolls — is still doing what they do best.
Tonight's got range. Folk Fest is running all day at Gallagher Park starting at 11 this morning, and it carries right through the evening. There's also an AC/DC pop-up at the Starlite Room at noon if you want to grab some merch and soak in the PWR/UP vibes. If comedy's your thing, Alfred Robles is at Rick Bronson's — The Comic Strip at 7 and again at 9:30. And there's Freestyle happening at River Cree at 7 if live music's calling.
Hockey fans: the Hlinka Gretzky Cup bronze game is on at Rogers Place at noon — junior-level stuff, but worth catching if you want to see some real young talent.
Weather's fair for being outside — that UV's high, so sunscreen if you're spending hours at the folk fest or the park. Everything else is just a good August Saturday.
Get out there. See you around.
