Friday kickoff: metal, football, and the long weekend ahead

Morning. We're sitting at 12°C and climbing into a decent Friday — UV's moderate at 4.0, so if you're heading outside this afternoon, you won't burn, but don't leave the sunscreen at home either. We've got a solid 13 and a half hours of daylight, which means your evening plans have some real breathing room before dark hits at 8:17.

Transit's got some extra peace officers on the beat today as the schools kick back in — 70,000 students heading back means busier LRT platforms and buses, so if you're timing a commute, give yourself a little extra buffer. Shouldn't be chaos, but the usual Friday-into-weekend rush is going to feel it.

Couple of things worth knowing this morning. A man got sentenced to 9½ years for killing someone over a stolen Camaro — another reminder of how fast things can spiral. There's also been a sentencing in the death of an 11-year-old that wrapped up in house arrest. Heavy stuff, but it's the kind of thing that lands in the city.

On the brighter side: if you've been jonesing for good dumplings, mark September 23 on your calendar — Dumpling Fest is bringing world cuisines to Edmonton restaurants that day. And if you haven't checked out the new Sip Soda Co. on Whyte Avenue yet, they're doing free drinks for early arrivals at their grand opening, so that's worth a swing if you're in Old Scona. Andy's Valleyview IGA also just came back to Parkview after two years away, same familiar name, so the neighbourhood's getting its anchor back.

Tonight's the start of Infest — three days of metal taking over the Ice District, Fan Park, and the Starlite Room. Day one's headlined by Voivod with Acid King, Spell, and a handful of others. If metal's your weekend, this is where you're at. Not your scene? The Golden Bears are playing Regina at Foote Field at 6:30, or there's indie-pop at Midway Music Hall at 7 if you want something tighter and less apocalyptic.

It's mild enough to be outside — you won't need a heavy coat, and the light's still going to be good well into the evening. Get out there.
