Long weekend's here — grab the live music before the cold creeps in.
Labour Day weekend kicks off with festival vibes, fresh food spots, and a 12°C Sunday perfect for getting out.
Morning, E-town. It's Sunday and you've got the long weekend stretching ahead. We're sitting at 12°C right now with a UV index at 4 — that's moderate, so you're good to spend the day outside without worrying too hard, but don't skip the sunscreen if you're planning to be out for hours. Sunset's at 8:12 tonight, so you've got real evening light to work with. Lean into it.
A couple things worth knowing this morning before you hit the day. The Edmonton Marathon course was measured 674 metres too long back in the summer — sounds like a small thing until you learn it cost 13 runners their Boston qualifiers. That's a rough one. On a better note, Veterans' House Edmonton just opened its doors: $16.1 million in supportive housing for homeless vets. Real progress on the ground.
If you're thinking food today, there's good timing. Sip Soda Co. just had its grand opening on Whyte Avenue and they're giving away free drinks for early arrivals, so if you're in the neighbourhood swing by and load up. Looking ahead a bit, Dumpling Fest is coming September 23 and will bring world cuisines to Edmonton restaurants — something to circle. Andy's Valleyview IGA is also back in Parkview after two years away under the familiar name, and if you've never tried Lingnan's egg rolls, they've been anchoring Edmonton family dining for over 70 years. Worth tracking down.
Tonight is solid if you're a live music person. Three venues are kicking off at 4:00 and 5:00 PM, so pick your lane. Foundation with Dom Dolla is running at the ICE District Parkade and Fan Park if you're into electronic. Infest Day 3 is spread across The Freemasons Hall and The Starlite Room with Weekend Nachos, Ahna, False Body, Cold Lungs, and Reject on the bill — that's your punk and indie play. Indoor venues, so the temperature doesn't matter; just show up and go. The vibe is pure festival weekend right now.
Use this long weekend well. The cold's coming — you can feel it in the air already — so get outside today, catch some live music tonight, and settle in for a proper binge if that's your speed. The river valley's still beautiful this time of year, and the city's got that end-of-summer energy that doesn't last long.
Stay sorted.
