Thursday's cold snap settles in — bundle up and plan ahead.
It's 2°C this morning. Couple of transit detours, some good live music tonight, and a few stories worth your attention.
It's dropped down to 2°C overnight — a real shift from the mild stretch we've had. You'll feel it on the walk to the car or the LRT stop this morning. Sunset's at 7:11 tonight, so if you're heading out after work, you've still got decent light until early evening. UV's at 3, so nothing to worry about there—focus on the temperature instead.
On the roads, keep an eye out for a couple of transit detours today. Route 514's got a planned reroute between 3127 and 3084, and Route 917's running two separate detours—one from 5212 to 5628, and another from 5749 to 5482. If either of those are on your usual commute, give yourself a bit of extra time and check ahead before you head out.
A few things worth knowing as you scroll through the morning: City council's taking another look at the public spaces bylaw today, with advocates pushing for sanctioned homeless encampments to be part of the conversation. It's something that keeps coming back. Meanwhile, PM Carney's in town marking the sixth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a reminder that the work on that front is, by her own words, far from finished. And if you've been following the illegal dumping complaints that have been piling up around Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta's proposing $100,000 fines to try and turn that around.
One small local loss: Island Brew Coffee House is closing up after a couple of years. The couple running it cited the struggle that small businesses face in E-town right now. If that was your spot, worth saying goodbye before it's gone. On the brighter side, Yves plant-based products are coming back to Canadian grocery shelves after being discontinued—so if you were missing those, check your usual spots.
Tonight's got some solid options depending on what you're after. Default's playing the Midway for their "Fallout" 25th Anniversary Tour at 7 PM—if you remember that record, it's worth the trip. LOLO's at Double Dragon the same time, and there's Dune Rats with a couple of opener bands at The Buckingham if you're leaning harder rock. Sports side: U of A Pandas Rugby takes on Victoria Vikes at Foote Field at 6 PM if you want to catch some live rugby instead.
Hang in there with the cold. It's here for a bit, so layer up and stay warm out there.
