Friday warmth before the snow — rodeo and live music all night

Good morning. It's Friday, it's warm for early October—8 degrees and the kind of day that won't last—so if you've got outdoor plans, now's the time. Sunset's at 6:52 tonight, so you've got a solid evening ahead once the sun drops.

One heads-up: there's a Special Weather Statement in the system. Nothing that'll wreck your day, but keep an eye on it—snow's moving in this Thanksgiving weekend, and the mountains are expecting 20-plus centimetres. For E-town itself, we're in the clear today, but the weather's about to turn.

A couple of things worth knowing this morning. There's a lot happening around the October 19 referendum—Alberta separation's not going away after that vote happens, and organizers are already talking about what comes next. Separately, there's been some serious tension in Chinatown over how the province and feds have been handling detainee drop-offs; local leaders say they've been asking for help and getting nowhere. And if you've been following the Khalilian referendum happening here next week, the RCMP's now warning organizers about credible death threats. Heavy stuff, but it's the air in the city right now.

If you're eating in tonight, there's some good stuff to try. Iron Hive's been making Alberta honey meads—the ancient fermented drink—and they've done it in a way that actually makes it accessible if you've never had one before. Vagabond Pop-ups just opened for dinner service in the old Wilfred's space over in Wîhkwêntôwin, if you're looking to try something new. Fair warning though: Island Brew Coffee House just closed after a couple of years—another small business casualty in the city. If you're plant-based, Yves products are back on grocery shelves after being pulled, so that's a win.

Tonight's the night if you want to get out. The Canadian Finals Rodeo kicks off at Rogers Place at 6:30 PM—that's the big one, runs through Sunday, and it's worth catching if you've never been. If metal's more your speed, Silly Goose with Cheem are playing The Buckingham (two shows, 6 and 7 PM). Ashley Brown's at the Winspear at 7:30 if you want something on the quieter end. There's also a PBR bull-riding event—BYOB Bull Battle with BFO—at the EXPO Centre at 3 PM if you want to get ahead of the evening crowd. And the Golden Bears Invitational volleyball's happening at Saville at 5 PM.

It's a long weekend starting right now, so lean into it. The weather's kind today, the sun's out, and there's enough going on that you'll find your vibe.

Stay warm out there.
