Friday's yours—3 degrees, live music, and the evening's wide open

It's Friday morning in E-town and you've got just over 10 hours of daylight to work with—sun's down by 6:35 PM, so if you're heading out tonight, plan accordingly. It's sitting at 3°C, which means a solid jacket weather day. UV's low at 2.0, so you're not getting burned even if the sun does peek through.

A couple of heavier things on the news side worth knowing: there's been a street racing crash that killed a 21-year-old at a bus shelter—another reminder that speed on city streets takes real lives. On the political front, there's been pushback around mail-in ballot rules ahead of the referendum, and some scrutineers are saying they're getting squeezed on space at polling stations. Nothing that changes your Friday, but it's happening.

If you're thinking about dinner, there's some good movement in the food scene. Nomiya on Calgary Trail has reborn itself as Nom—elevated Japanese dining if you're in the mood for something a step up from standard ramen. If you're after something a bit different, Vagabond Pop-ups just opened for dinner in Wîhkwêntôwin's old Wilfred's space. And if you're into mead (yeah, the ancient honey wine thing), Iron Hive's got some accessible options worth a try. Fair warning: Island Brew Coffee House has closed after a couple of years—the small-business grind in the city's getting real, so if you've got a spot you love, maybe swing by and grab a coffee.

This evening's got legs. If live music is your thing, Paul Cauthen's at Midway Music Hall at 7 PM, or you could catch Ethereal Tomb at The Starlite Room at 6. Comedy lovers have Tom Papa at Myer Horowitz Theatre, also at 7. If you're more of a sports person, the Pandas Rugby squad's taking on Lethbridge Pronghorns out at Foote Field at 6 PM—that's a good, close-to-home option if you want to be outside and moving before it gets dark.

The real move tonight is just getting out and doing something. It's Friday, it's not arctic yet, and E-town's got enough going on that you can fill the evening however you want. Stay warm, stay safe on the roads, and have a good one.
