Referendum day, first frost — stay warm and sorted.
It's voting day for Alberta, and the mercury's dropped. A few things to know before you head out.
Monday morning and we're back to real autumn — zero degrees with the sun setting at 6:29, so dress for the commute and plan indoor plans for after dark. UV's low, so that's not a worry; the cold's the thing. If you haven't voted yet on Alberta's 10-question referendum, polls open at 9 a.m. today.
Commute should move normally — no major disruptions flagged for the morning push. Just watch for black ice on the bridges once the sun goes down; the roads'll be slick.
Today's got weight to it. A pair of things worth knowing: four soldiers were killed in a grass fire during training at CFB Wainwright — that's heavy news for the military community and the province. On the brighter side, Flair Airlines just launched nonstop flights from Edmonton straight to Saint John for $199 one-way, which opens up a different slice of Canada if you've been thinking about it.
If you're hungry, there's good reason to get out. Elio's opened on the south side with Filipino comfort food and a real gathering vibe — the kind of place that feels like it's been there longer than it has. If ramen's your lane, Nomiya's reinventing itself as Nom on Calgary Trail, stepping up into elevated Japanese dining. And if you're curious about something a little different, Iron Hive's making meads from Alberta honey — it's an ancient drink that's easier to get into than you'd think. For something even more adventurous, Vagabond Pop-ups just opened for dinner in the space that used to be Wilfred's at Wîhkwêntôwin. Plenty of reasons to eat out tonight instead of heating up leftovers.
Monday nights tend to be quiet for live stuff, so don't expect much in the way of events. This is a night for grabbing dinner somewhere real and calling it early, or streaming something at home with the door locked against the cold. The week picks up — the Oil take on Minnesota tomorrow night at Rogers Place, and there's solid live music coming this weekend. But tonight? It's yours to spend however you want.
Stay warm out there. See you on the other side of the vote.
