Tuesday's chill, a referendum vote, and the Oil face Minnesota tonight

Morning—it's -1 out there, feels a bit colder, so layer up for the commute. We're sliding into that part of the year now. Sunset's at 6:26, so your evening plans need to wrap up early if you're heading out after dark.

If you're taking the bus, Route 560 has a detour running today from Calahoo and McLeod eastbound over to Century and McLeod. There's also a closure at the 102 St and 111 Av eastbound stop, so check your usual route if that's your regular way in.

Today's the referendum—Alberta's got a 10-question ballot, and polls open at 9 a.m. If you haven't figured out where your polling station is, now's the time. Get it done early and you're sorted for the day.

A few things on the local radar: Morgan Wong, an Edmonton soldier, was promoted just before a fire at CFB Wainwright that killed four members of his unit during training. Friends remember him as someone with quiet strength in service. The RCMP wrapped their investigation into the incident, leaving the full military review to continue. There's also been $16,000 raised for the family of Private Hayden Lykkemark, one of those killed.

If you're thinking about lunch or dinner tonight, there's some good movement in the food scene. Paperbirch by Chartrand is closing its run at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market after two years—if you've been meaning to try them, time's limited. On the flip side, Elio's just opened on the south side with Filipino comfort food built around a gathering ethos. And if you've been to Nomiya on Calgary Trail, it's been reborn as Nom—elevated Japanese dining, ramen roots but way more on the menu now. For something different, Iron Hive's been making waves with Alberta honey meads that are genuinely approachable if you've never gone down the mead road before.

This evening, the Oilers take on the Minnesota Wild at Rogers Place at 7. If hockey's not your thing, Faber Drive's at the Starlite Room same time—live rock, which is a solid Tuesday option.

Stay warm out there.
