Sunday cold snap — wrestling, music, and fresh openings
It's a crisp one out there. Grab your coat and make a day of it.
It's Sunday morning and we've dropped to -8°C overnight — a proper bite after the milder stretch. You'll want the heavy jacket if you're heading out, but it's not a day to stay in. Sunset's at 6:16, so you've got a solid nine and a half hours of daylight to work with. UV's low, so no sunscreen required, but the cold will stick around.
If you're planning transit anywhere, keep an eye on a few route changes today. The 671, 678, 414, and 111 all have detours running, so check your stops before you head out. Nothing major, but worth a quick look if you're relying on the bus.
The Oil took it on the chin last night — Leafs came into Rogers Place and ran them 7-2, snapping Edmonton's three-game win streak. Not the way you want to start your Sunday sports talk, but that's hockey. If you're keen to catch some action today, the Okotoks Oilers take on Sherwood Park Crusaders at 2 p.m. up in the Park.
On the neighbourhood front, Hazeldean Bakery reopened on the south side this week and people turned out in huge numbers to welcome the new owners — worth a visit if you've got a Sunday pastry run planned. Over on the Ave, Paperbirch by Chartrand is calling it quits after two years at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market. If you haven't been yet, this might be your last chance. On the flip side, Elio's just opened with Filipino comfort food, and Nom — the ramen shop reborn as elevated Japanese dining on Calgary Trail — is worth scoping out if you've got dinner on the mind.
Irving Kipnes, a big figure in Edmonton development and giving, passed away this week at 90. He shaped a lot of what this city looks like.
There's live music kicking off tonight if you want to get out of the cold for a bit. Garden of Ash plays the Starlite Room at 6 p.m. with Rattylsnake, Even Odds, and No Alibi, and if you're into wrestling, Top Talent Wrestling is at Midway Music Hall at 5 p.m. The Buckingham's hosting a vogue night and fundraiser called Ballroom at the Buck Vol. 2 at 7 p.m. — that one's got a gathering energy to it. All indoors, all warm. Bundle up getting there, and you're set.
Stay warm out there.
