Cold, crisp Tuesday in E-town, with a few detours to plan around
Minus one and bright out there, with bus detours on the Whitemud corridor and a solid night of live music ahead.
Morning, Edmonton. It's -1 out there, feeling like -2 with a little bite on top, so grab the good toque before you head out the door. The sky's clear and UV is sitting at 1.0, which means the sun is out but not doing much for your face. You've got 9 hours and 48 minutes of daylight today, with sunset around 6:11 PM, so if you're heading out after work, plan for the dark to show up on your drive home.
If you're getting around by bus, pay attention. Routes 055 and 056 are both on planned detours today. Southbound, they're rerouted from 159 Street and 87 Avenue to Whitemud Drive and 53 Avenue. Northbound, they're going from Whitemud Drive and 53 Avenue to 159 Street and 83 Avenue. Give yourself a few extra minutes at the stop, and if you're meeting someone, tell them to check the route before they head out.
In the news, Strathcona-Sherwood Park voters backed immigration limits but rejected separation-related changes, and Smith's immigration questions narrowly passed while Albertans turned down the constitutional changes. Closer to home, Edmonton and Fort McMurray are among the courthouses getting $6 million in security upgrades. On the sports side, the Roughriders beat the Elks 16-9 in Regina, with Stevens setting a CFL rushing touchdown record. The Oilers are also cutting Rogers Place concession prices on certain items, which is good news if you're catching a game and tired of paying arena prices.
For lunch or dinner, there's some new energy around town. Hazeldean Bakery has reopened in south Edmonton with hundreds turning out to welcome the new owners. Elio's has opened on the south side with Filipino comfort food and a gathering vibe that feels made for a cold night. And Nomiya is now Nom on Calgary Trail, the old ramen shop reborn as a more elevated Japanese spot. Paperbirch by Chartrand is closing at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market after two years, so if you've been meaning to stop by, don't wait too long.
Tonight there are two live shows worth looking at. Digable Planets are playing 30 Years of Blowout Comb at Midway Music Hall at 7:00 PM, with Mauvey opening, and the Buena Vista Orchestra is at Myer Horowitz Theatre at 8:30 PM. Both are indoor shows, so the cold doesn't really matter once you're inside. If you want a quieter night, an early dinner somewhere warm before the show is a good move on a Tuesday.
That's your Tuesday, Edmonton. Bundle up, leave a little extra time for the bus, and enjoy the music tonight.
