Bundle Up, E-town: Cold Wednesday, Oilers Tonight

Morning, Edmonton. It's -2 out there right now, but it feels closer to -7, and there's a Special Weather Statement in effect, so take it seriously before you head out. Dress in layers, keep the scraper handy, and give yourself a few extra minutes if you're walking or waiting at a stop. Sunset is at 6:09 this evening, so you've got about nine and a half hours of daylight to get your errands done. If you're making plans for after dark, you'll want to be heading home in the glow of the streetlights.

For getting around, there's a detour and service change affecting one of the routes, plus a stop closure at 163 Street and 99 Avenue, with the southbound stop at 163 Street and 100 Avenue also affected. If you ride transit or drive that corridor, check your route before you leave. Route 106 has also returned to 132 Avenue, so if you've been wondering where it's gone, it's back where it belongs.

Downtown is getting more connected. The pedway is being extended to link the Churchill LRT station with the Station Lands, which means a warmer walk for anyone moving between the core and the transit hub once it's finished. Over at the Legislature, fall sitting has opened with UCP MLAs split over separatism and a push for a leadership review, and the house is taking up affordability and education after the referendum. It's the kind of session that's worth a glance if you follow provincial politics. Meanwhile, $6 million in security upgrades is coming to courthouses in Edmonton and Fort McMurray.

If you're hungry for something new, Hazeldean Bakery has reopened in south Edmonton with new owners, and the neighbourhood turned out in force to welcome them back. Elio's has also opened on the south side, serving Filipino comfort food in a setting built around gathering people together, which sounds like exactly the kind of place to warm up on a cold night. Nomiya has been reborn as Nom on Calgary Trail, trading its ramen-shop roots for elevated Japanese dining. Sad news for market fans: Paperbirch by Chartrand is closing at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market after two years, so grab a last taste if you've been meaning to.

Tonight is a big one. The Oilers take on the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place at 6:30, so if you've got tickets or a spot on the couch, that's your evening sorted. If hockey isn't your thing, the Bucky Halloween Drag Show is at The Buckingham at 8:00, and Festival Place in Sherwood Park has a Legends Show at 7:00. With the cold settling in, indoor plans are the easy call tonight, though the walk from the arena or the bar strip will have you wishing you'd worn the good toque.

Stay warm out there, Edmonton, and enjoy the game.
