Edmonton Fringe breaks post-pandemic records with 142,000 tickets sold

The 45th Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival has shattered multiple post-pandemic records, distributing $1.52 million directly to artists after 11 days of performances that drew record crowds across the city.

As of August 24, the festival sold over 142,000 tickets with 550 sold-out shows and 24 sold-out runs. The festival recorded 825,000 site visits across its grounds — a record that reflects the city's sustained appetite for live theatre. The 2026 Fringe featured 209 theatre productions across 37 venues, plus 16 free concerts in ATB Park, 35 outdoor performers, and free programming throughout the festival grounds.

The haul represents a significant jump from 2025, when the festival sold 138,500 tickets and returned $1.47 million to artists. In 2019, the pre-pandemic benchmark, the festival distributed $1.39 million. The momentum signals that Edmonton's theatre community and audiences have not just recovered from the pandemic slowdown — they've grown past it.

The festival wrapped Sunday after running through good weather and strong audience turnout, with attendees showing what organizers called their "love of the arts and passion for local festivals." The success puts Edmonton's Fringe among Canada's strongest annual cultural events, cementing the city's identity as a festival destination.
