Downtown grocery anchor Sunterra Market closes after 32 years

Commerce Place location shuttered Friday after three decades serving the core. Lendrum location remains open.

Sunterra Market's Commerce Place location is closing after 32 years, marking the loss of a downtown fixture for workers and residents grabbing lunch or coffee on the go.

The grocery chain announced the closure on social media, with final operations on Friday, May 29. The spot at 10150 Jasper Ave. had been a reliable quick stop for those in the core — a place to grab a coffee, sandwich, or groceries between meetings or during lunch breaks.

While the Commerce Place closure is a setback for downtown vitality, Sunterra confirmed it's not leaving Edmonton entirely. The Lendrum location remains operational, and the company's catering service will continue to be serviced through that location for delivery and pickup orders.

The closure adds to ongoing concerns about downtown's ability to retain retail anchors and maintain foot traffic during work hours, particularly as office occupancy remains uneven across the city.
