Leduc Library's Summer Reading Challenge returns July 6 with a new ocean theme, running through August 7. The free, drop-in program is designed to help kids 5 to 12 stay engaged with reading and learning over the summer break — no registration required.
The program, called "Dive Into Reading," structures each week around an ocean theme: beach days, under-the-sea adventures, pirates and mermaids, and more. There are learning components woven throughout, focusing on math, science, literacy, and language arts.
Drop-in hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 5:40 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. "It's all designed to encourage children to not lose their academic progress during the summer, and to continue to read," said Summer Program Coordinator Amie Brown.
Kids can enter draws for reading 15 minutes a day, and another draw when they complete all five stations of that week's ocean theme. Local businesses have donated prizes including a new bike, hotel stay-cations, Lego sets, Squishmallows, and restaurant gift cards.
The program kicks off July 6 with Kids Day — a kickoff party from 10 a.m. to noon featuring mascots from popular shows, face painting, and other activities.
Leduc Library is also looking for teen volunteers ages 13 to 17 to help run the program. Interested teens can fill out an application form at the library or online at www.leduclibrary.ca through June.
It's a solid option for keeping kids reading through summer without the screen-stare — and the prizes sweeten the deal.
