The City of Spruce Grove has partnered with Bird Canada to launch a micromobility program using shared electric scooters and bicycles. To help residents understand the partnership, Bird Canada is holding safety and information sessions throughout June and August.
Electric scooters are motorized, two-wheeled devices with a platform where riders stand, propelled by a battery-powered motor. Riders control throttle, steering, and brakes.
Electric bikes are traditional bicycles equipped with electric motors that assist pedaling. Riders control pedaling, steering, and brakes, with motor assistance helping navigate longer distances and inclines.
Sidewalks, roads, and multi-use trails are shared spaces used by people of all ages and abilities. To ensure safety and comfort for everyone, e-scooter and e-bike users must ride responsibly.
Key safety guidelines include: - Slow down in crowded areas and when passing pedestrians or other trail users - Pay attention to surroundings and watch for driveway and parking lot entrances - Follow all traffic controls - Stay to the right and pass on the left, leaving space for others - Move to the side on narrow or busy sidewalks or trails - Use your voice, horn, or bell when passing people - Ensure headlights and taillights are functioning - Don't block paths; step off trails when stopping - When parking, place devices on grass or areas where they don't block trails, sidewalks, or roads
For non-functioning lights or other equipment issues, report them to Bird Canada using the app, by phone at 1-866-205-2442, or email 311_sprucegrove@birdcanada.co.
