A massive industrial module is moving from Edmonton to Fort Saskatchewan over the next two days, with drivers warned to expect significant delays on area highways.
The de-ethanizer—a module used in natural gas processing to separate ethane from heavier hydrocarbons—weighs approximately 750 tonnes and measures nearly 100 metres long and 7.7 metres wide. The load requires specialized trailers to transport safely.
Beginning Wednesday, August 12 at 11 p.m., the module will depart from Dacro Industries in Edmonton on Highway 216, then Highway 14, heading east. Due to its size and weight, the load will travel at a maximum speed of 30 km/h with guide vehicles, using the entire width of the highway including the shoulder.
The journey will include these road closures in counterflow: - Highway 216 southbound (counterflow) - Highway 14 eastbound (counterflow) - Whitemud Drive NW eastbound (counterflow)
The load will reach the east side of Highway 21 at 5 a.m. Thursday, August 13, where it will remain staged all day.
On Friday, August 14 at 2 a.m., movement resumes: east on Highway 14, north on Highway 834, west on Highway 15, and finally north on Range Road 220 to DOW Chemical in Fort Saskatchewan, arriving around noon.
