After a wet start to summer, Alberta residents shouldn't expect a dry fall either. The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its 2026 Canadian Edition fall forecast, predicting milder temperatures across much of the Prairies but wetter-than-normal conditions.

For the southern Prairies, including Calgary and Edmonton, warmer-than-average weather is expected, with October showing the biggest temperature departures from normal. However, both September and October should be wetter than average — news many Albertans aren't eager to hear following a drenched June and multiple rounds of soaking thunderstorms in July.

Across Canada as a whole, it's shaping up to be a milder fall overall. Warmer-than-average temperatures are forecast for much of the country, while cooler weather settles into central and northern Canada and southwestern British Columbia. Most of Canada is expected to experience above-average precipitation this fall, with British Columbia as the notable exception.

The Almanac's long-range forecasts rely on three pillars: solar science, climatology, and meteorology. By tracking the sun's activity, studying long-term weather patterns, and monitoring atmospheric changes, the forecasters piece together signals about each season's trajectory. Those signals are then compared to a 30-year statistical average from government meteorological agencies, using the current benchmark of 1991–2020.
