Alberta will launch a new Red Seal program for commercial drivers in June 2027, establishing standardized training and testing requirements across the province in a bid to professionalize the trucking industry.
Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen announced the move during a rural media event on August 13. "So a ticket, a journeyman ticket — similar to being an electrician," he explained. "To be able to have a certain set of criteria of training in the trucking industry. To be able to get that advanced type of training so that you're having that type of professionalism within the trucking industry."
Alberta has been advocating for a red seal trade across the trucking industry nationwide. Under the new program, drivers and companies will see competency-based Class 1 training with content specific to Alberta's unique terrain, weather, cargo and equipment. Safety, wellness and responsibility are foundational to the curriculum, which includes content on personal health, workplace safety and incident response.
Current experienced commercial drivers will keep their Class 1 licences but can complete a competency exam to achieve journeyman status. Drivers, licensed training schools, carriers, instructors and examiners throughout the province will all meet the same standards, with a standardized oversight framework governing the industry.
Dreeshen said the province is focused on expanding beyond Alberta's borders. "Drivers cross borders while working and when looking for new work," he noted. "A standardization across provinces or the country via a red seal program would further improve the system."
The government is hoping to see the curriculum written in Alberta and then approved with four other provinces to initiate red seal certification across Canada. "I think that'll go a long way to just increasing professionalism in the trucking industry," Dreeshen said. "And it's something that, hopefully, we can get buy-in across the country."
Industry organizations including the Alberta Motor and Transportation Association have supported the move, noting the competency-based training includes content addressing Alberta-specific driving challenges and emphasizing safety and accountability.
