Frank's Community Pub, located just south of downtown Edmonton, was broken into around 5 a.m. Thursday. An individual wearing a vest took a laptop, two bottles of booze, and $250 in cash in less than a minute.

Owner Sean Thompson, who opened the nearly two-year-old pub, said his staff cleaned up the damages and reopened for business the same day. While insurance covers the break-in itself, Thompson has to replace a laptop and work through the claims process.

"It's the last thing we want but it is a reality unfortunately," Thompson said Edmonton. "Being a small business owner there's a million challenges you know it's a lot of problem solving it's you know so it just adds to the pile essentially, it's not great."

Thompson described the financial toll bluntly: "Financially, it's a burden. We now have to go out and buy a new laptop and you know all these things. So yeah it's a hit for sure and then the insurance process, who knows how long that's going to take."

Ryan Mitton, with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, noted that many business owners factor the cost of increased insurance premiums against the cost of filing claims. "Oftentimes people when they look at the cost of going to their insurance, they look at the cost of an increased premiums. They can be left feeling like why bother," Mitton said.

Thompson emphasized the value of community vigilance: "Keeping eyes on your neighbor's property. Everybody looking out for each other is just a good reminder in general that that seems to help in communities like ours."

Downtown Edmonton businesses have reported increasing break-ins and theft forcing them to spend more on security measures.
