Canada Post will expand community mailbox service to an additional 56,000 addresses across Edmonton and Calgary beginning next year, the corporation announced Friday.

The shift is part of ongoing restructuring aimed at reducing costs following postal worker strikes in 2024 and 2025. The corporation has not yet identified which Edmonton neighborhoods will transition away from door-to-door delivery by 2027, though some mature neighborhoods including King Edward Park currently still receive mail directly at their homes.

Residents have mixed reactions to the change. Some worry about security — community mailboxes have experienced break-ins and theft — and the potential impact on postal workers. Canada Post says the mailboxes are secure, equipped with locks on each compartment.

Others see practical benefits. One resident noted the change could encourage more walking and that financial sustainability may require these kinds of adjustments to keep postal service viable long-term.

The corporation will provide more details on affected neighborhoods as the transition approaches.
