Edmonton city council voted Monday to rezone six surface parking lots at 115 Street NW and Jasper Avenue, allowing them to operate as temporary parking while developers move forward with plans for two high-rise residential towers.
The rezoning, approved 12-0 (with Ward O-Day'min Coun. Anne Stevenson excluding herself due to pecuniary interest), enables Greenlong Construction Inc. and Stantec Consulting Ltd. to keep using the land as a parking lot while planning up to 905 residential units on the sites. The move brings the number of lots that have requested valid permits to 62 of 113 in the city centre.
A June 30 deadline looms for all Edmonton parking lot operators to comply with new regulations—including requirements to plant trees, ensure proper drainage, install lighting, and create walkways. Property owners who have secured temporary permits have an additional 18 months to implement those changes. Mayor Andrew Knack said non-compliant operators face fines, stop orders, and violation notices. The temporary permit is valid until 2033 for gravel lots and 2037 for paved ones.
