Downtown Summer Campaign Launches with 1,000+ Free Events

Edmonton's $3M 'Turn Up Downtown' initiative kicks off May through December with activities across parks and public spaces.

Edmonton is betting $3 million on bringing people back downtown this summer. The city's new "Turn Up Downtown" campaign runs through December and includes over 1,000 events and activities — block parties, fitness classes, farmers markets, and community social events spread across parks and public spaces.

Mayor Andrew Knack said the investment supports the kind of accessible public spaces and street activity that make downtown a place where people want to spend time and connect. The campaign is part of the broader Downtown Action Plan, which funds community-led projects in the core.

The lineup includes a block party series and Pride Month kickoff at Rice Howard Way Entertainment District, themed socials like the Summer Street Crawl and Country Social, fitness activities in parks including Alex Decoteau and Michael Phair, a downtown farmers market, and ridership appreciation events at LRT stations. More details are available on the city's website.

For a downtown that's spent years cycling through revitalization efforts, this one at least has scale and a clear calendar. Whether locals actually show up is another question — but the infrastructure's there.
