Edmonton's mountain bike park in Queen Elizabeth Park is targeting a September 5 opening, but only if Mother Nature cooperates.

Work began last summer with a July 25 target, but June's record rainfall forced crews to halt. From June 2 through July 2, only two days allowed any building. At one point, the pump track area held so much water it resembled a swimming pool.

Project lead Josh Nowochin said the consistent moisture made the dirt too wet to build on. Pumping out water consumed weeks of labour.

The park is now about 40 per cent complete with roughly two months until the rescheduled opening. Nowochin said builders remain confident they'll finish on time — assuming no more downpours.

Multiple volunteers are meeting regularly to restart construction and push toward the September 5 date.
