Edmonton resident Dwight Peter MacIntyre, 44, has been charged with uttering a threat against Prime Minister Mark Carney after RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team identified him posting threats on X (formerly Twitter).
RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region became aware of a user on X who allegedly posted threats targeting the Prime Minister. The RCMP investigation launched on September 4. MacIntyre was arrested and charged on September 9. Edmonton Police Service and Alberta RCMP's Parkland detachment assisted in the investigation. The specific content of the alleged threats has not been disclosed.
MacIntyre is scheduled to appear at Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton on November 25.
"People should not assume they can make threats online without consequences," said Supt. Matt Johnson, officer in charge of national security with RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region. "When online comments cross the line into criminal conduct, police will investigate and take appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable. Criminal online actions have real-world consequences, regardless of whether they are made behind a screen."
RCMP stated that "this is a time for increased vigilance." The investigation remains ongoing.
This follows a similar case in Calgary, where a man was arrested last month over death threats against Carney posted on a YouTube account.
