Edmonton Elks rout Toronto Argonauts 42-12 to climb back into West Division race

The Edmonton Elks stormed back from two straight losses with a dominant 42-12 win over the visiting Toronto Argonauts at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, posting an 18-point fourth-quarter offensive surge to climb back within striking distance of the West Division leaders.

The 7-3 Elks had dropped consecutive games to Montreal and Saskatchewan — the latter a 28-26 loss to the Riders on August 1 — and used Saturday's decisive victory to stay competitive in a tightly bunched division. Next up: the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit Commonwealth Stadium on Friday, August 21, at 7:30 p.m. on TSN and 880 CHED.

Quarterback Cody Fajardo orchestrated the offensive show, finishing 25 of 31 for 301 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions, averaging 9.7 yards per throw. Running back Justin Rankin led the charge on the ground and through the air, accumulating 108 all-purpose yards (47 rushing, 61 receiving) with one touchdown on 16 carries. Rankin's eight-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Edmonton a 24-12 lead heading into the fourth.

Toronto struck first with a field goal after Argos defensive back James Ceasar forced a fumble on star receiver Austin Mack's opening drive, but Edmonton answered with kicker Vincent Blanchard's field goal to tie it 3-3. A booming 62-yard punt from Jake Julien sailed through the end zone for a single point, giving the Elks a 4-3 lead. Cole Snyder's one-yard touchdown plunge put Edmonton up 11-3 midway through the second quarter before former Elks quarterback Nick Arbuckle scored on a short run for Toronto, closing the half at 11-9.

The third quarter turned into a field-goal exchange as both teams traded three-pointers to reach 17-12 before Rankin's scoring run extended Edmonton's advantage. Fajardo's 10-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Cephus made it 31-12 in the fourth, and defensive back JJ Ross sealed the rout with an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown, setting the final at 42-12 after Blanchard's 24-yard field goal.
