Edmonton infill protesters gather across city, demanding council reverse eight-unit multiplex rules

Infill protesters gathered across Edmonton on Sunday, with crowds in multiple neighbourhoods voicing frustration over city council's decision to allow eight-unit multiplexes in any residential zone.

More than 60 people attended the Parkview protest on Sunday afternoon. Many live near a new infill or one under construction. Protest organizer Jill Bladon said the response has been strong. "People are pissed, to be honest with you," she said. "People do not like this zoning bylaw. We're getting a lot of support from people honking around here. They want change."

Residents say council isn't listening. Their concerns centre on buildings that are too large for quiet streets, insufficient parking and inadequate garbage bin space. Some residents report feeling unable to stop changes even after taking legal action.

Jill Didow, a protester from Dovercourt, said the neighbourhood now has five or six infills. "I thought, 'Oh my God, Dovercourt is safe, they haven't found us yet.' And then just slowly, we've got five or six of them in there now," she said.

A Parkview resident is now watching seven small apartments be built on her street. "It's not that we don't want to welcome people into our area. I'm a new neighbour, right? I would've been resentful if they didn't welcome me. But we want to have the right number of people in a small area like this."

Protesters are hoping to replicate Calgary's outcome: city council there repealed its blanket rezoning bylaw in spring 2026. Didow said residents feel powerless. "Everything is in favour of the developers, and the homeowners get nothing. We weren't told. We have to fight. We have to go up against the SDAB."
