The overall crime severity index—which measures the volume and severity of police-reported crimes on a nationally standardized scale—dropped 6.5% between 2024 and 2025. Violent crime severity increased 3.2%, while non-violent severity fell 11%. However, the total crime rate climbed 3.2% when measured by the number of police-reported crimes per 100,000 people.
The biggest concern is property crime. Edmonton's property crime rate jumped 10.1% in 2025, driven by three categories: shoplifting under $5,000 surged 30%, mischief increased 23%, and theft under $5,000 from motor vehicles rose 17%.
"In 2025, we saw our crime rate creeping up after steady decreases in recent years, along with notable increases in property crime," said Police Operations Chief Devin Laforce.
In response, the Edmonton Police Service launched Safer Edmonton in early 2026, a crime management approach using data mapping to deploy resources strategically by community boundaries. A monthlong deployment in Northwest Branch this summer resulted in an 18.7% decrease in violent crime and a 23.7% decrease in disorder events year to date. The service says it is continuing this data-driven, proactive approach alongside partnerships aimed at connecting people to needed services.
