Edmonton police warn of distraction robberies targeting senior South Asian women
Since mid-August, at least 20 reported incidents involve suspects approaching victims in vehicles, using conversation tactics to steal jewelry.

Edmonton Police Service has warned the public about a sharp rise in distraction-style robberies targeting senior South Asian women. Since August 19, police received at least 20 reports of incidents where suspects drive through residential areas, engage victims in conversation by asking for directions or offering blessings, then grab or forcibly remove jewelry.
The method is deliberate. Suspects, described as professionals following a script, approach victims in parking lots, driveways or alongside roads. Some pose as stranded motorists needing money for food, gas or airfare, offering gold or jewelry in exchange. Once victims are distracted by a hug, blessing or gesture, thieves swap real jewelry for cheap pieces or pull victims toward vehicles to steal from them directly.
"Due to the forceful nature of these robberies and the fact that vehicles are involved, police are concerned that someone may get hurt," Detective Brys Francis of the EPS Investigative Response Team said. No serious injuries have been reported to date, but the escalation has raised alarms.
Police urge anyone who is victimized or witnesses a robbery to call 911 immediately and, if safe, take down the suspect vehicle's license plate and description. The service is also advising the public to be vigilant when approached suddenly by strangers, avoid approaching unknown vehicles, refrain from openly displaying expensive jewelry or watches, and trust their instincts—if a situation doesn't feel right, move away and do not engage.
Distraction thefts have been a growing problem in Edmonton for more than a year. Last year, RCMP received numerous reports related to gold and jewelry scams across Alberta, with several hundred distraction theft complaints made to police in Edmonton and Calgary in 2025.
