Edmonton Public Schools has cancelled all international travel for students and staff in the 2026-27 school year, scrapping approved trips to Thailand, France, the United Kingdom, and Portugal.
In a statement, EPSB spokesperson Kim Smith said the pause "prioritizes student and staff safety and well-being" amid "a complex global landscape of evolving political, economic and public health challenges."
Schools and families are being asked to plan alternative trips within Canada instead. Smith acknowledged the disappointment: "These trips can be the highlight of a student's school year. Making this decision now allows schools and families to adjust their plans and explore other opportunities."
The board said it will monitor the global situation and review the decision next year. No timeline was given for when international travel might resume.
