Elections Alberta has identified a spoof website attempting to impersonate the electoral office, containing fictitious names, addresses, phone numbers, and fake "elector ID" numbers.

The fraudulent site, electionsab.ca, mimics the legitimate Elections Alberta URL at elections.ab.ca. The fake data is not derived from Alberta's actual List of Electors, the office confirmed.

Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure said the disinformation activity is intended to undermine public confidence in elections. "I believe this disinformation activity is intended to 'spoof' Elections Alberta and is an attempt to reduce public confidence in my Office and electoral events in Alberta," he said in a statement.

McClure noted that such disinformation is not covered by recently created "deepfake" provisions in the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act. He has contacted enforcement and cyber security agencies and is working to have the website taken down.

Albertans who notice similar activity are encouraged to report it to Elections Alberta by calling 780-427-7191 or emailing info@elections.ab.ca.
