Evan Bouchard knocked out of World Championship by illegal hit

Oilers defenceman suffers serious injury representing Canada; USA player ejected for check to head.

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard was forced out of Canada's quarter-final game at the World Championship Thursday after taking a high hit from USA defenceman Ryan Lindgren.

Lindgren was ejected with a five-minute major and game misconduct for an illegal check to the head. Bouchard appeared to be knocked unconscious for a brief moment on the ice before being attended to by medical staff.

The hit looked serious — far more severe than an earlier collision Bouchard sustained against Anaheim during the regular season. His status for the Oilers' upcoming season remains unclear pending medical evaluation.

Canada won the game 4-0, advancing in the tournament. The injury adds to an already demanding stretch for Edmonton's blue-line depth.
