Edmonton's months have names like "False Hope Season" and "Blood Donation Month," according to a new hardcover from the Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel. Weathering YEG: A Survivor's Guide to Edmonton's Seasons gives each month a short story and a craft cocktail built from Alberta distillery ingredients. June is "Blood Donation Month." November is "Darkness & Denial."

Each of the 12 chapters has a story by Ryan Jones, the hotel's sales manager, and a signature cocktail. Photography by Jeff Day shows spots around the city that most people walk past.

The book is sold through the online store of Halo Bar & Bistro, at 4236 36th Ave. E. in the Edmonton International Airport area. Each purchase sends $10 to RENcares, in support of the Inner City Youth Development Association.

Kylie Wetmore, the hotel's director of sales and one of the project's main drivers, says the book began as a local distillery tour guide for a visiting guest. "We never direct our guests to go to chains," she says. "We hope this book serves as a witty, beautiful nod to the quiet resilience of Edmontonians."

The November cocktail is the Halo Bar's take on a classic Manhattan, made with Rig Hand Distillery Rocking R 100% rye whisky, dry and sweet vermouth, vanilla syrup, tabasco bitters and a maraschino cherry. It is stirred with ice and served in a rocks glass over a king cube.
