A major Edmonton homebuilder is responding to health-conscious buyers with homes designed from the ground up for better indoor air, water quality, and safety — features that used to be aftermarket upgrades are now standard.

Brookfield Residential is building every Alberta home to BUILTGREEN® standards, which means robust HVAC systems with UV light technology and activated carbon filters that capture odours, off-gassed chemicals, and airborne particles traditional furnaces miss. A Heat Recovery Ventilator swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air, heated in winter and cooled in summer.

The water story is equally thorough. Every Brookfield home includes a three-phase reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink that filters out more than 90 per cent of dissolved solids — heavy metals, sodium, nitrates, "forever chemicals," microplastics, chlorine, arsenic. The company says this eliminates the need for bottled water and saves money while keeping plastic out of landfills.

Safety features include carbon monoxide and smoke alarms on every level, front door cameras with smart deadbolts, fire-resistant walls and exteriors, leak detection with automatic shutoff, and radon mitigation systems that vent the odourless, soil-derived gas before it enters living spaces.

The homes also feature triple-pane windows for energy efficiency, airtight construction for consistent indoor climate, and added sound reduction in shared walls. The result, the company says, is quieter, more comfortable homes that support everyday health.

These are not luxury add-ons — they're part of the standard build. Brookfield has been prioritizing safety for over 70 years, and this iteration reflects consumer demand for homes that actively support wellness rather than simply meet building code.
