Josh Samanski loaned to Bakersfield as Owen Michaels beats out second-year centre

Second-year centre Josh Samanski has been loaned to the Bakersfield Condors after losing his fourth-line job to Owen Michaels, a 24-year-old college free agent signed from Western Michigan University this year.

Samanski, also 24, recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in 24 NHL games during his rookie season last year, adding 1 goal and 1 assist in 5 playoff games. In AHL appearances with Bakersfield, he posted goals and assists.

Michaels' win over Samanski for the fourth-line job signals a shift in how Edmonton's roster is shaping. Isaac Howard has been bumped from the third line to the fourth line, while Kasperi Kapanen moved to the second line. The fourth line will feature Howard, Michaels, and Frederic when the Oilers open their 2026-27 regular season Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place.

Head Coach Mike Babcock confirmed that Tristan Jarry will start against Vancouver, while Jason Dickinson will not be available for the game.

The demotion comes as the Oilers manage tight cap constraints. Earlier this year, the team shed Darnell Nurse's contract in free agency and signed Stanley Cup-winning goalie Frederik Andersen to a one-year deal. Cap space collapsed to just under $300,000 as five injuries piled up before the season opener.
