The Toronto Maple Leafs overwhelmed the Edmonton Oilers 7-2 at Rogers Place on Saturday night, extending their winning streak to four games and exposing depth and compete gaps in the Oil's lineup.
William Nylander scored twice to reach 300 NHL goals, leading a four-goal third-period explosion for Toronto. Anthony Stolarz made 30 saves for the Leafs, while Edmonton's Tristan Jarry allowed six goals on 25 shots. Jack Roslovic, Auston Matthews, Troy Stecher, Zack MacEwen, and Vinni Lettieri also scored for Toronto, which improved to 7-4-2. Edmonton dropped to 8-2-1, snapping its three-game winning streak.
Leon Draisaitl extended his scoring streak to six games with two goals, bringing his season total to league-leading 12. He has scored nine goals across that six-game stretch and posted three consecutive two-goal performances. Connor McDavid picked up two assists to extend his point streak to 11 games; Evan Bouchard also had two assists to reach an eight-game point streak.
But the Oilers' scoring was limited to those three players — just three Edmonton skaters registered a point all night, compared to 13 Leafs. Toronto killed off 30 consecutive penalties before Edmonton scored late, and holds a 12-2-1 record at Rogers Place since the Oilers moved downtown.
Head coach Mike Babcock acknowledged Toronto's superiority. "They got ready, they came in here, they're on a road trip, they got prepared, and they played harder and faster for longer than we did. Better defensively, better offensively, just better," he said. "Their bottom six was better than ours, but the bottom line is they were better than us, they were more competitive than us."
Wingers Zach Hyman and Kasperi Kapanen acknowledged the same. "We're capable of playing way better and being way more competitive," Hyman said. Kapanen added: "Saturday night against these guys is what we live for as hockey players and it just wasn't enough today. They were just better."
Edmonton was missing Mattias Ekholm (concussion protocol) and Devon Levi (undisclosed injury), with Trent Frederic and Ike Howard healthy scratches. Max Jones and Filip Hallander filled spots on the fourth line.
Edmonton hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Monday to continue its five-game homestand.
